I’ve been doing woodworking for a few years now but never really thought to invest in a Lathe. Because woodworking is something I really enjoy, I finally decided to try my hand at shaping and doing more elaborate carpentry.  The Jet 708360 was highly recommended to me by a few friends who share my passion for woodworking.

For a while, I thought about getting a much more costly and bigger lathe such as the Oneway.  But it’s really just pretty heavy and very expensive and does pretty much the same job as the JET 708360.

The Jet  is quite a bit less pricey and generally does the sort of projects I’m interested in.  I was glad to find that it was fairly simple to get up and running.   The sections were flawlessly aligned, something I really appreciated since I have had to deal with misaligned openings with other that had to be put together.  

For the unit’s performance, I couldn’t have asked for a better machine.  It definitely works very well and it is very quiet and has just about no vibration.  It gives me a smooth cut and the lack of vibration makes polishing a whole bunch easier. It also has a good tail sock, a durable motor, and the belt adjustment is very easy to maneuver.  Plus, it has a useful tool rack where you can place your other tools.  I’ve been very satisfied with the 708360.

I actually don’t have any large complaints about it and the shipping was free when I bought it from Amazon.   In my opinion, the Jet 708360 was pretty much a bargain.  It delivers a a lot of value compared to buying a more expensive unit pretty much  just for bragging rights.

I haven’t had any regrets so far with the lathe.  I can recommend the Jet 708360 because it has really exceeded my expectations.

The Fender Stratocaster or the Strat is one of the most copied and used electric guitar models of all time. It\\\’s rival for this distinction is the Gibson Les Paul and possibly the Fender Telecaster. Even larger well known companies like Ibanez and Peavey have made lower cost versions of the Strat.  The much copied Strat can range from very cheaply made, to boutique quality with upgraded tuners, pickups and hardware.

The Stratocaster is a three pickup guitar with a double cut away design.  It has twenty one frets on a one piece neck.  The Stratocasters design was more aerodynamic than its predecessor Telecaster which had a flat block-like look. If the Stra’s “comfort contour” and recessed jack plate were not enough Fender created a whole new set of possibilities with a floating bridge.

Fender anchored five springs to the bridge keeping it flat against the body.  Guitarists could remove two of these springs, and tighten the remaining three allowing the bridge to float.  By pushing or pulling a tremolo or whammy bar players could quickly increase or decrease the pitch of the notes without crossing there fingers over a fret strip.  The effect of which gave the change between notes a fluid gradual shift rather than an abrupt change from higher to lower or lower to higher.

Eddie Van Halen is considered a pioneer  with using the floating bridge functionality to its fullest.  The final seconds of the track “Eruption”  as it leads into “You Really Got Me”, although not played on a Strat, is a prime example of what a whammy bar can do, and just one of the reasons the Fender Stratocaster has its place amongst the greatest most enduring guitars of all time.

The Gibson Les Paul is a solid body guitar that purists love.   Developed in 1950 this electric guitar has a signature resonant sound that both players and listeners recognize and enjoy.

In the 1950’s guitars were becoming more than just a fad.  Competition from Fender with their introduction of the Stratocaster and Telecaster fueled the innovation of the Gibson Les Paul.  Jazz guitarist and innovator Les Paul had sought to produce his own solid body guitar “The Log”.  When his  design didn’t get any traction in the industry he agreed to work with Gibson as a consultant on a new project.  To what extent Les Paul contributed, to the guitar that bears his name, will forever be disputed.  The result of his union with Gibson did produce a guitar that would set a high standard for quality that other guitars would be measured against.

The original road map for the Les Paul was to feature two lines: Regular or “Goldtop” and Custom.  The Custom featured the same single cut away design with upgraded hardware.  Due to other innovations in pick-ups and hardware, as well as inspirations about design, the Les Paul would later become a full series of guitars that continues to be manufactured today.  Other styles include the Junior, Special, Standard, SG, Deluxe, Studio and more.
