Car Buying – What is Gap Coverage?

With the prices of cars today going out of sight, it is important to make sure you are protected in the event of an accident. In many cases, your insurance will not pay off your vehicle if it is totaled in an accident. That is why many lenders and dealers will offer you GAP coverage to protect your investment and your credit rating.

What is GAP Coverage?

GAP stands for Guaranteed Auto Protection. It protects YOU in the event of a total loss of your vehicle.

GAP comes into play:

1. If your vehicle is in an accident and is a total loss or is stolen and non-recoverable. This also includes flood, fire, hurricanes, etc.

2. Your insurance will pay the actual cash value of the vehicle (what the vehicle is worth, not what you owe)

3. GAP will pay the remaining amount on the loan plus your insurance deductible.

GAP coverage is designed to protect your investment on a vehicle you are still making payments on. Since a vehicle begins depreciating as soon as you drive it off the dealership lot, GAP coverage is a way to assist in any unforeseen loss that you might not expect. Your insurance company will only protect you for the ACV (actual cash value) of the vehicle. GAP coverage is designed to cover you for the difference between that amount and the amount you owe on the vehicle.

For example:

1. You have a remaining a balance of $8,000 on your loan. (The remaining balance that needs to be paid before you can purchase a new car)

2. You car is totaled and your insurance pays $4,000 for your car (the vehicles ACV),

3. GAP will pay the remaining $4,000 plus your insurance deductible up to $1,000.

4. You are out of pocket NOTHING and can get into a new car faster.

GAP coverage is a small investment on your part but could save you a considerable amount if something were to happen to your vehicle unexpectedly.

You can find out more about GAP coverage and getting a car loan at OpenRoad Lending.

How You Can Save Money And Gas With A Tire Pressure Gauge

If you have a car then you probably already know that it is very important to have tires with enough air in them. If they don’t have enough air then you waste much gas and this will eventually cost you much money. So it is advisable to get a tire pressure gauge so that you can check your tire pressure very easily.

There are new models available and if you have some money to spend you can also get digital tire pressure gauges to make it even easier for you to check the tire pressure of your car. Even people who don’t have a clue about cars and tires will see if they need more air in the tire and will be able to make sure that everything is in the green range.

The gas prices are climbing very fast and it is in your own interest to make sure that your car wastes as little gas as possible. If you don’t do this then it will cost you much money in the end so make sure you check your tire pressure regularly to avoid these costs.

ScanGauge ii 3 in One

I’ve used the ScanGauge ii  for a bit more than a month. I’m very glad I finally decided to gave in and buy it, particularly since it more than more than paid for itself in the very first two weeks I used it.

My 2001 Civic has had its NEEDS MAINTENANCE light on for a couple years and the repair (a brand new rear exhaust sensor) would be around $200 put in. I attached the ScanGauge ii  and cleared the code in order to check if it might come back. In about a thousand miles since, it has not.

Initially I justified purchasing the ScanGauge ii because over the long term, I would be able to modify my driving habits for better fuel economy, saving me money. The instantaneous gas economy and throttle % indicators have helped me to achieve this. I’m now getting more than the EPA estimated fuel economy for my car’s model. EPA city: 20 Highway: 27 Combined: 23.

Not only does it give better fuel economy, the ScanGauge has a variety of other sensors. Anything the car’s computer knows, it can tell you.
It also gives you error codes that can easily be checked over the internet, allowing you to diagnose and repair your car’s problems instead of taking it to some mechanic who will probably charge you a fee simply to plug it in.

I enjoy the “gauge” readouts and also the wide range of information provided.  I’d say it’s a very helpful product.  Based on fuel savings alone, for most people it’ll very likely pay for itself in approximately six months of typical driving.

Choose A Cheap Used Police Car

What, drive around in an ex-police car? If the thought isn’t quite used to you, you might want to re-think. Used police cars are actually a great choice if you would like to buy cheap. If you choose well, you have access to one that’s well-maintained with a repair record or logbook which is more than likely more complete and accurate than anything you have for your old dependable. Better yet, used police cars can be bought at a fraction of their value.

What to look for:

Check where the car was originally from. Most city police cars have had a tough run, while some police cars from a rural area may have less depreciation. This is not a general rule, but it may be useful.

Check for equipment that have been added or taking away. It’s a used police car, so expect stuff like sirens, lights, cages, gun mounts, antennas, spot lights and the like. The unit may have holes in the trunk and roof because of these. Some used police cars also have rear side windows and rear door locks that don’t work – not an awful thing, but some family members or friends might find it annoying.

Speaking of sirens and lights, don’t be too ecstatic about providing them with on your car. Some states prohibit possession of police sirens and lights, so it’s best to discuss with your municipality about laws and regulations concerning them. Also, taking out these equipment will mean some wiring concerns and yes, holes on your unit.

Used police cars usually have rubber floors. Great if you discover one with carpeting so you get more buffer from noise and heat. Check also if the automobile was used as a K9 unit. Yep, you have to know this. Now and again no amount of Glade can take away the nasty dog smell and it’s just not cool driving a nice car that smells like a dog house.

Another concern would be the color of the vehicle. Most used police cars in the auction lot are black or white or a combination of both. And then there are the blues, silvers, grays and tans, or some other color, depending on which government agency used it. If you bought one with some damage on the body, you may have a difficulty matching the color, although you get the paint custom mixed. Also, black and white combination cars are illegal in a few states.

Try to look for the average mileage in the used police car lot. If you see one with a really low mileage, you may believe you’ve hit the jackpot, but be wary. In spite of how rich you think your state is, a police agency just does not put up its used cars for auction for no reason. One risk of a low-mileage used police car is that it could have been involved in a collision, so it’s best to check its background.

Just for your own personal security, subscribe to CarFax so you are able to check the history of the cars you are curious about, especially mileage noted during state inspections and any accidents they may have been involved in. However, not all used police cars involved in accidents are reported to an insurance underwriter, which signifies you may not learn an unforeseen event report with CarFax.

The best thing to do is check the title to see if it’s been salvaged and how often the vehicle has changed hands. Ask a well-read friend or a motor mechanic to assist you in your choice before you conclude the offer. Ask for a copy of a repair report and records so you can see the precise damage the motor car sustained, when it was fixed, the name of the shop who did the repairs and the list of parts that have been exchanged.

No matter what car dealers tell you, there is no such thing as a premium or luxurious used police car package. Whether they’ve been driven by regular policemen or top brass officers, it’s really your choice to select your own personal if that used police car is a bargain.

Rear drive shaft containment loop: Scribner Welding has the best

Scribner Welding is a high quality, small fabrication and machine shop. It began only because of customer demand, and the love for cars.

I began building my own car parts in the 1960’s while working in various positions.  Draftsman, machinist, and equipment field mechanic. All of which have contributed to the expertise of the craftmanship we create.

Most of my education was in diesel engines, hydraulics and electrical, however, my first love has always been street rods and drag cars.  I was always building an engine or suspension parts for someone in the evenings.  It was quite a “hobby”.

In the 1970’s, I built tooling to narrow 12 bolts, and 9 inch Ford rearends.  In the mid 1980’s, I took a rearend that I had narrowed for my own use, to a swap meet. I was only looking to sell it. To my surprise, there were people all day long, asking questions. Most of them had never seen a TIG welded rearend. There was such extreme interest, and demand, that in January 1990, Scribner Welding was officially a business, specializing in Narrowed Rearends.

Acquiring the distributorship for Aurora Rod Ends in January 1997, we became Scribner Welding and Distributing.

I have more than thirty years experience in TIG welding, and have completed 1300+ narrowed rearends. The specialty continues to be with rearends. Our sheet metal housings have been referred to as  ”works of art”. Due to customer demand, we have also ventured into custom aluminum fabrication, suspension components, and driveshafts. We also deal heavily with axles and all parts pertaining to building rearends, and suspension components.

Scribner Welding is proud to be “the place to go” for fabricated parts and components for your special project. We thrive for customer satisfaction.
